Bollywood Stars at ‘EMI’ music launch party - Celina Jaitley, Kim Sharma,Tulip Joshi, Tanisha Mukherjee, Sophie Chowdhary, Divya Khosla Kumar, Malaika Arora, Aarti Chhabria, Prachi Desai and others from the filmy world at ‘EMI’ music launch party held at Hotel Intercontinental, Andheri on September 19, 2008. The makers of the forthcoming flick ‘EMI’ are leaving no stones unturned in grabbing attention towards the film which has an unusual story line revolving around an issue that is very common yet never been presented in any way through Bollywood films till now. For the first time in the history of films in India, the music launch was conceptualized and held as a televised event on Friday evening.

If industry gossip is to be believed, Bollywood actress and spicy music sensation Poonam Jhawer will be the first Bollywood actress to do a Playboy centrespread. Poonam is expected to done her 'birthday suit' for the photo session, say sources. However, neither Poonam nor Playboy Inc sources were willing to comment on the news. However, a co-ordinator close to Poonam confirmed this news saying that her associates were negotiating with an international photographer known to be working with Playboy.

When contacted Playboy Inc sources said that somebody was talking to them about an Indian actress doing a centrespread, however, they were unable to confirm any details whatsoever and claimed that nothing has been finalised. A Playboy spokesperson only said, "We talk to hundreds of beautiful women everyday who would like to grace our covers. We are not sure if the concerned actress is doing a centrespread for us. We cannot confirm anything."

However, when contacted one of Poonam's friends said, "Why not? It's an honour to be contacted by Playboy and whether she finally does the shoot or not, it's definitely worth giving a try."

The one who refused to believe! Fox Moulder and Dana Scully have been the FBI`s most famous detectives on television and the partnership has endured alien abductions, ghosts, vampires, cannibals and whatever creator Chris Carter thought of next.

The on-screen chemistry was simply wonderful—day-dreaming Moulder (David Duchovny) and the well-grounded Scully (Gillian Anderson) trying to figure out why the body is missing the head and has only three fingers. For over 10 years they provided wholesome entertainment and sent shivers down our spines only to fade out following an onslaught of other such shows and a wasted Chris Carter!

Moulder and Scully will live on forever in our hearts as the federal agents who taught us to look up and believe that all those shiny lights are not stars. Weak scripts failed them, but as themselves they still stand in second place.

Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider

Angelina Jolie did the world two favours—Girl Interrupted and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. For all that we can thank her later, but on this list Ms Croft takes the seat. Combining Indiana Jones, James Bond and the most beautiful face alive was an easy task for director Simon West because he had Anjelina Jolie in the rolls.

The plot was simple and all he had to do was play a bit of the video games to get the hang of it and everything else about the movie just fell into place. But the hard part was trying to get Jolie to fit the bill—but then again, who said she couldn`t do it!

Dressed in the trademark tight-fitting battle suit with the twin Heckler & Koch USPs drawn, Jolie seemed almost identical to the video game character (she even sounded like her). The end result was amazing and if it weren`t for Simon West`s overconfidence, the movie would have received a little more than just a 5.5 on IMDB. But for those amazing legs, Ms Jolie steps on fourth.

Couples gone wrong…perfect pairs so fazed by day-to-day survival that they no longer endear each other. One partner’s request for time of the other seems an unreasonable demand.

In this case, Nikhil’s (Randeep Hooda) sky-rocketing ambition irks his girlfriend for it’s taking them apart. When was the last time we really spoke? asks Tara (Shahana Goswami) to the always-too-busy Nikhil as he shrugs this little complaint off. Several Hindi films have explored the souring of relationships in the past (Saathiya, Chalte-Chalte, Metro); and they’ve all been successful at connecting with the audience.

In Ru-Ba-Ru, Nikhil and Tara live together in Thailand. One morning after the couple has argued as usual, Nikhil confesses having forgotten about Tara’s show, one that she had been rehearsing for since months, and about which she had reminded him umpteen times.

He’s also edgy about a presentation that day. (Strangely you see either Indians or white-skinned foreigners in the workplace, hardly any locals.) Tara barges into the meeting thinking he’s forgotten some papers and clumsily drops them in the serious room. He looks like lightening has struck him. She fumbles apologies and excuses herself. He’s infuriated over her untimely interruption on his important day. And you switch off the film already. This scene, despite not saying much, is extended and goes over-time.

The evening of the play, Tara still hopes to make up over a nice dinner, but Nikhil has audaciously decided to entertain his clients at the same restaurant, and leaves her mid-meal. A freak incident that night allows him to relive the miserable day once more. This chance makes him introspect his actions and undo his mistakes. (You might find yourself thinking back to Sliding Doors that you could roughly group in a similar genre. But RBR’s central inspiration comes from the Jennifer Love Hewitt starrer If Only.) A mysterious taxi driver (Khulbushan Kharbanda) appears out if nowhere acting as the catalyst in the unnatural turn of events. You wait in pleasant anticipation to see how the story will handle this fable-like element in the middle of an everyday couple crisis. However, the following half leaves you disappointed leading to an ending that is pointless.

Story-telling by debut director Arjun Bali is earnest but takes too long to establish its premise. The extended lover tiffs get boring and so does the story that doesn’t move forward for a while. There are some touching moments though. Notable is the one where Tara sees Nikhil go into a jewellery showroom the day of her show. Since they had joked about a ring as a possible gift that morning, Tara is excited. But the tiny box reveals an unexpected something that acts as the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The dialogue veers from naturally conversational to the contrived; after the first half, I stopped counting the number if sorrys the characters said to each other. The cinematography prefers to catch everyday sights and sounds of Bangkok rather than its exoticism and beaches, as is the norm.

Randeep Hooda is superb as the man who falls in love all over again. He plays the extremes of a cold, jaded lover and the sensitive, caring boyfriend perfectly. Shahana Goswami, after earning superb reviews for Rock On!!, gives another brilliant performance. Both Randeep and Shahana prove to be ten-on-ten performers.

Ru-Ba-Ru is the same old frothy romantic cone with a different, slightly bitter flavour. If only the makers knew how to use the interesting premise more expertly, this film would have more attributes to boast of than just the lead performances.

Carrie Anne Moss as Trinity in The Matrix

The one who saves the other one`s behind! In a deeply complicated and almost algebraic plot, Carrie Anne Moss as Trinity kept us awake (and, of course, the special effects). Morpheus was highly boring with his `choices` monologue and while he was putting grandma to sleep, Trinity was kicking software elsewhere.

The Matrix has gone on to spawn two sequels and is now a cult hit, but the role of Trinity is often ignored. She had the necessary sex appeal, was dressed in black and had a brilliant way of making an entrance. The famous lobby scene would have been incomplete without her—Neo, by himself, wouldn`t have stood a chance.

For carving out her own place in a movie that broke through the barriers of drunken imagination, Trinity takes the sixth place.

Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil

When the T-Virus decimates Racoon City, turning the neighbours into hungry zombies, guess who prepares to run for mayor—it`s Alice.

Milla Jovovich plays one of the most memorable characters in popular culture, in a movie that in turn takes its inspiration from a series of best-selling video games that just re-defined the way we play. Ms Jovovich was the darling of the entire gaming community after this role and her place in their hearts was almost spiritual.

Directed by Paul W S Anderson, Resident Evil was about a military team trying to retake control of a top-secret underground lab that`s now under zombie reign. Jovovich plays an amnesiac heroine who`s not really sure of what happened, but is finally able to understand the scale of destruction following a series of flashbacks.

Fans of the film will remember the epic opening scene in the bathtub, and the pure adrenaline rush during the fire fights. For pure action and extremely good looks, Jovovich takes away the seventh spot.

Kate Beckinsale in Underworld

Now we go a little paranormal! Underworld was a delight for fans of the Werewolf vs Vampires genre—if it exists that is. A sexy Kate Beckinsale played Serene, a vampire assassin who hunts down werewolves for a job. The gunfights were loud and apocalyptic, and most of the movie set didn`t survive the end.

And despite two protruding fangs and a pair of unnaturally blue eyes, Beckinsale was an instant hit with everything teenage. They talked about her, discussed her, bought her photographs and even considered bringing her home to mum. For that effect, Serene prowls at number eight

Barrymore, Diaz and Liu in Charlie’s Angels

Charlie`s three angels who send the bad guys to hell. In the ninth place are Drew Barrymore and her terrible acting, an extremely hot Cameron Diaz and I-can`t-seem-to-smile Lucy Liu. The action was good and the stunts seemed out of this world.

The plot revolved around how a voice identification software goes missing and how the three `detectives` use everything but police procedure to get the crims! The film has its share of good jokes with Bill Murray heading that department and a Cameron Diaz, who’s in fantastic shape, heads the sex appeal trio.

The film came out eight years ago and most of you must have caught it on TV over dinner. But for the sake of it, once more won`t hurt!

Kristanna Loken as the T-X in Terminator 3

She gave poor Mr Schwarzenegger a hard time in part three of one of the greatest action movies ever made! Packing state-of-the-art weaponry and virtually indestructible, the T-X was one of Skynet`s best cyborgs—sent back in time to eliminate the man who threatens the machines of the future.

Kristanna Loken was simply amazing as the female cyborg going against an Arnold Schwarzenegger who looked like a pensioner with a bus pass. In fact, she was the only striking feature in a movie that was replete with over-the-top action sequences and crap dialogues.

The model turned actress was solid and held her expressions in place to play one of the toughest roles ever scripted for a female villain—hand-to-hand combat with a Mr Olympia and for that feat, she`s 10th on the list!

The political scene in Andhra Pradesh is set to change dramatically with Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi planning to launch his political party in August, a close aide has said.
The actor’s brother-in-law and filmmaker Allu Arvind told newsmen here that Chiranjeevi is likely to launch his party on August 22, his birthday.

Arvind made the statement during a rally by Chiranjeevi National Trade Union Congress (CNTUC), a trade union in the actor’s name. The rally was organised to appeal to the actor to join politics.

When the rally reached Geeta Arts office in up market Jubilee Hills, Allu Arvind came out to make the statement.

“Responding to appeals from different sections of the community, I am sure, he will definitely enter politics. He has taken a firm and clear decision and he will personally make an announcement,” he said.

This is the clearest ever statement from Arvind, a close confidante of Chiranjeevi, since speculations on the actor’s plunge into politics began a few months ago.

“Some people are asking why he is taking such a long time. Politics is too big an issue and he is taking a reasonable time. He doesn’t take hasty decisions. He thinks and takes a correct decision,” said Arvind.

“We thank you. It is not just the trade union but the students, women, IT professional, lawyers and doctors all want him to come to politics,” he said.

Sources close to the actor said the party would be called Labour Party and its symbol would be a train.

“We are at a railway platform. We are waiting for a train that will take us to the right destination,” Arvind had said in January.

“When will your train arrive,” a scribe had asked Chiranjeevi on Thursday after he cast his vote in the by-elections. “Allu Arvind is taking care of the train issue. Address your queries to him,” the actor had replied.

It was in November last year that one of his close aides claimed that he had decided to launch a party. The speculations led to his fans holding meetings in different parts of the state to urge him to make an early announcement.

Chiranjeevi, however, came out with a statement a few days later appealing to his fans to remain patient till he made an announcement. Continuing the suspense, the actor had said in January that he needed more time to take a decision.

People are drawing a parallel with thespian N.T. Rama Rao’s political entry in 1982. He had come to power within nine months of launching Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
Chiru, as Chiranjeevi is popularly known, has dominated the Telugu film industry for over two decades. One of the highest paid actors in India, Chiru has massive fan following across the state.
